Amidst all the excitement surrounding Isle of Arran Distillers new venture the Lagg Distillery, which is expected to open in 2019, many missed the limited edition release of one of Arran’s oldest expressions. Such is the reputation and respect that Arran has garnered, it’s easy to forget that they were only established in 1995, and so have only very recently be able to offer whisky of this age.
Only 9,000 bottles of the 21 Year Old were released worldwide and when we poured a dram, we discovered that hazelnut and chocolate combo of praline, prunes, figs, crystallised ginger, woody spices and tangy grapefruit. It’s quite the richest Arran we’ve had the pleasure of imbibing and is sure to be snapped up by loyal fans.
In the shadow of Goatfell at the north of the island, Arran boasts some of the purest water in all of Scotland. This remote young distillery had to delay their opening to avoid disturbing a pair of nesting Golden Eagles, but it has rocketed into the whisky hall of fame and is much-loved by connoisseurs throughout the world.
